Last Practice 2015

Please note that Wednesday, 2nd December 2015, will be our last practice in the Bandroom for this year.  We will resume on Wednesday 6th January 2016. However, please remember there are plenty of jobs for us between these dates.  Make sure you have an up to date list, or ask for a copy.  If there is anything you aren’t sure about, please contact any committee member and we will try to help.

Remembrance Sunday

It was good to play for Remembrance Sunday at St Michael's Church, Abergele - the first time we have played for this service in our "home" town.

The band played well, the rain held off, the church was packed, and we had some very favourable comments from members of the congregation, who really appreciated having a brass band there for the occasion.  Special thanks to Dave Kent for his impeccable playing of the Last Post and Reveille.

"Silly Season" begins

Well what I like to call the "silly season" has started; no let up now till the end of summer (which barely seems to have begun yet, weather-wise).  Our first two jobs are over, and they couldn't have been more different in every possible way.  Last Saturday we played for Denbighshire Learning Disability Forum Fun Day in Prestatyn.  There were lots of activities going on around us, so there was quite a bit of noise to compete with, and we were playing in a large conservatory, with the sun beating down, so much so that "jackets off" soon became the order of the day, to prevent us all from melting!

Conttrast this with the job yesterday - our annual date at Colwyn Bay Community Hospital Fete, where the weather is normally gloriously sunny and warm.  Not so on 13th June 2015, oh no.  Rather than "Jackets off" it was more a case of "jumpers and gloves on."  OK the threatened rain kept away, but by gum it was very cold - so much so that we played Vivaldi's Winter to reflect the "summer" temperature!!!!  Fingers crossed for some improvement as the season progresses.

R I P Reg Moon

It is extremely sad to have to write another RIP within only a few days of the last one.  Although Reg hadn't played for a while, he was always on hand to help out as a conductor.

We shall miss him very much indeed, not only for his help and expertise, but also for his wit and dry sense of humour. Alas, another fine player and a true gentleman has been lost to the banding world.

We will be playing at his funeral on Friday 1st May, and our thoughts are with Esme and the family.

R I P Fred Williams

On Friday 10th April, band members gathered in St Michael's church, Abergele, to bid a fond farewell to Fred Williams. They accompanied the hymns during the service, and a small group played the "bandsman's hymn" - Deep Harmony - at the graveside.

Fred had played cornet since the age of 12 and had been principal cornet with one of the RAF bands during his National Service. He had also played in several local bands,  playing cornet and flugel with Beulah for the past eight years. He was a well respected and much loved member of the band, and will be sadly missed by everyone.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Gwyneth and the family at this sad time.
